Vox Box

Vocal exercises to strengthen the voice and develop supple flexibility and stamina. I learned most of these exercises in thirty years ago from Tom Blaylock who taught them to me to restore my voice after my voice box was damaged from overuse, smoke and dehydration. Use them daily or a few times a week - and your vocal strength and pliancy will grow. Done before a vocal engagement, these exercises will prime your voice for singing for as much as two hours. To vocalize with ascending and descending exercises smooths, opens and brings out the voice at its best.

Gently but firmly hold your lower jaw open by pressing the corners of your mouth together, causing your mouth to be open and your jaw unable to close and keep mouth movement to a minimum during the exercises. Breathe in and out a couple of times before starting. Sit straight with your legs uncrossed and limbs at right angles for clear breath control. You can stand if that's more comfortable. A mirror can be helpful to as you learn and practice of these exercises.

When you are done with the vocalices, sing songs that follow and explore the melody (Kate on the right) and harmony (Steve on the left). Adjust the volume to learn the parts. Lyrics are provided to download and print, make notes on them to help you with breath spots and phrasing.
